Dizzy Gillespie

Dizzy Gillespie brought showmanship, dazzling technical command, and an Afro-Cuban rhythmic sensibility to the bebop revolution he helped invent alongside Charlie Parker. His trademark bent trumpet bell and puffed cheeks made him instantly recognizable, but underneath the comedy was one of the most advanced harmonic minds jazz ever produced. As bandleader and educator, he spent decades mentoring the generation of trumpeters who came after him.
