Mario Bauzá
Prudencio Mario Bauzá was a clarinet prodigy who performed with the Havana Symphony at eleven before moving to New York in 1930 and teaching himself trumpet to break into the city's jazz scene. As co-founder and musical director of his brother-in-law Machito's Afro-Cubans from 1939 to 1976, Bauzá married Cuban clave rhythm to big-band jazz arranging and soloing, composing "Tanga" in 1943 — a spontaneous rehearsal sketch now generally credited as the first true Afro-Cuban jazz recording.
