Ice-T
Tracy Marrow began rapping about the Los Angeles street life he'd lived firsthand, and his 1986 single "6 in the Mornin'" is widely credited as one of the records that invented gangsta rap's blunt, narrative style. He went on to found the Rhyme Syndicate, front the metal band Body Count, and become one of hip-hop's most enduring crossover figures, but it's that stark early single that echoes through nearly every West Coast gangsta rapper who followed him.
