Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers
Frankie Lymon was only thirteen when 'Why Do Fools Fall in Love' made him and his group, the Teenagers, into rock and roll's first teen idols in 1956 — proof that doo-wop's harmonies could be sung by kids and still top the charts. Lymon's soaring, unbroken voice and the group's collegiate, matching-sweater image gave early rock and roll a wholesome, youthful face that record labels rushed to replicate. His solo career and life afterward were tragically short, but the template of the teenage pop idol he helped invent never really went away.
