Cream
Cream took the blues jam and blew it up to arena scale, with Eric Clapton's guitar, Jack Bruce's voice and bass, and Ginger Baker's jazz-schooled drumming turning three-minute songs into extended, virtuosic conversations. They were, briefly, the loudest and most technically dazzling band in the world. Their heavy, blues-soaked power-trio format became a direct template for hard rock.
