Mehdi Hassan

Mehdi Hassan, born near Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan and settled in Pakistan after Partition, was a Kirana-gharana–trained musician revered as the 'Shahenshah-e-Ghazal,' the king of the ghazal. From the 1950s he wedded rigorous Hindustani classical raga to Urdu poetry, phrasing verse with a slow, sustained gravity that shaped ghazal singers on both sides of the border. Landmark renditions such as 'Ranjish Hi Sahi' became the measuring stick for the form.
