Joe Higgs
Joe Higgs was a Trenchtown-based singer and songwriter often called reggae's "Godfather" for the informal vocal classes he ran in the early 1960s, where he taught a young Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer to harmonize. His own recording career, capped by the 1975 album Life of Contradiction, produced socially conscious songs that stand alongside the Wailers' work he shaped from behind the scenes. He died of cancer in 1999.
