Vinícius de Moraes

Vinícius de Moraes was a poet and diplomat turned lyricist whose plainspoken, romantic verse gave bossa nova its emotional register, co-writing 'Garota de Ipanema' and dozens of other Jobim standards. His 1966 album with guitarist Baden Powell, Os Afro-Sambas, pushed further into Afro-Brazilian percussion and Candomblé-inflected melody, widening the musical vocabulary later generations of Brazilian pop artists have drawn on.
