Talat Mahmood
Talat Mahmood was a Hindi and Urdu film playback singer and occasional actor whose soft, faintly trembling velvet baritone made him the pre-eminent voice of the film ghazal in the 1950s. Prizing delicacy and restraint over power, he brought a hushed, poetic refinement to romantic and melancholy songs such as 'Jalte Hain Jiske Liye.' His silken phrasing offered a gentler alternative to the era's more robust male singers and shaped later ghazal stylists.
