Surinder Kaur
Born in 1929 in Lahore, Surinder Kaur made her professional debut on Lahore Radio in 1943 and went on to record more than 2,000 songs over a nearly 60-year career, earning her the honorific 'Nightingale of Punjab.' Alongside her sister Prakash Kaur, she helped define the sound of Punjabi women's folk singing, later receiving the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Padma Shri. Her radio broadcasts on Punjab's airwaves shaped the generation of folk-pop singers who followed, including Gurdas Maan, who grew up listening to All India Radio and Radio Pakistan.
