Salamat Ali Khan
Ustad Salamat Ali Khan was a Pakistani vocalist of the Sham Chaurasia gharana who, performing for decades in duet with his brother Nazakat Ali Khan, became one of the most internationally recognized voices in Hindustani classical music, including an acclaimed 1969 Edinburgh Festival appearance. Trained first by his father, Ustad Vilayat Ali Khan, and later refined under Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, he went on to teach a generation of singers himself — among his students, Abida Parveen.
Salamat Ali Khan studied under Bade Ghulam Ali Khan after his early training with his own father, absorbing the Patiala gharana's khayal depth even though his own reputation was built on the more intimate duet form he shared with his brother.
listen for'Raag Bahar' unfolds slowly, note by note, before any ornamentation appears — that patient raga exposition, refusing to rush to the tune, is the Bade Ghulam Ali Khan influence at work.
