S. Janaki

Sistla Janaki, born in 1938 in coastal Andhra Pradesh, launched her playback career in 1957 with the Tamil film Vidhiyin Vilayattu and went on to sing for six decades across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi cinema. Shaping her art largely outside formal classical schooling, she became renowned for an intensely expressive, emotionally pliant voice equally at home in folk, semi-classical and devotional registers, and her long partnership with composer Ilaiyaraaja produced many of her most enduring melodies. Songs such as 'Senthoora Poove' brought her National Film Award recognition and established her among the most versatile playback singers in Indian film history.
