Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore, the Bengali polymath and Nobel laureate, composed some two thousand songs collectively known as Rabindra Sangeet - a body of work fusing Hindustani classical raga, Bengali folk and devotional traditions into flowing, speech-shaped melodies. His songs became foundational to Bengali musical culture and were carried into film and popular recording by generations of singers. Two nations later adopted his compositions as their national anthems.
