Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was the first Russian composer to achieve lasting international stature, fusing Western symphonic and operatic forms with an intensely personal, melancholic melodic voice. His ballets - Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty - and symphonies remain among the most performed works in the classical repertoire. He mentored a generation of Russian composers, including the young Rachmaninoff, before his sudden death in 1893.
