Oscar Peterson
Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson built a career on staggering technical command and unstoppable swing, becoming one of the most recorded jazz musicians of the 20th century through his prolific work for Verve Records. His blues-rooted virtuosity and drive at the keyboard set a standard for pianistic showmanship that younger players measured themselves against. Peterson's combination of technique and groove fed into the generation of jazz pianists, Herbie Hancock among them, who came up idolizing his recordings.
