Luiz Gonzaga
Luiz Gonzaga carried the accordion, zabumba, and triangle out of the drought-stricken Northeastern sertão and onto Rio's radio waves, inventing baião as a recorded genre and becoming known as 'the King of Baião.' Songs like 'Asa Branca' — co-written with Humberto Teixeira as a lament for migrants fleeing famine — gave millions of Northeastern Brazilians a voice on national radio for the first time. Caetano Veloso, who grew up hearing Gonzaga's broadcasts as a child in Bahia, later called him the first great mass-culture event in Brazil.
