Luis Vargas

Luis Vargas, born in Monte Cristi Province in 1961, emerged in the early 1980s as one of the architects of modern, guitar-driven bachata, known for stinging lead lines and blunt, double-entendre-laced lyrics of heartbreak. He was among the bachateros who pushed the style toward the Latin mainstream, and he mentored a young Antony Santos, who played in his band before becoming his chief rival. Nicknamed "El Rey Supremo de la Bachata," he has recorded prolifically across four decades.
