Durk Devontay Banks emerged from Chicago's South Side as one of the architects of drill's melodic wing, pairing gang-affiliated street reporting with plaintive, half-sung hooks that softened the genre's harshest edges. Founder of the Only the Family collective, he built a decade-long run of mixtapes before Drake's 2020 feature on "Laugh Now Cry Later" vaulted him into pop's upper register, even as the murder of labelmate King Von that same year darkened his catalog into open grief. By 2023's Almost Healed he had become one of rap's most reliable hitmakers, turning hard-won trauma into a Grammy-winning single.
