Lal Chand Yamla Jatt

Born in 1910, Lal Chand Yamla Jatt is widely credited with laying the foundation of modern Punjabi folk music, popularizing the tumbi through his soft-strummed style and earning a gold medal from Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1956. His records, including 1963's 'Das Main Ki Pyar Wichon Khattya', became a Punjabi folk bedrock; a young Gurdas Maan has said he practiced writing songs to the metre of Yamla Jatt's tunes before he was even a teenager.
