Kool Moe Dee
Mohandas Dewese came up in Harlem as a member of the pioneering trio the Treacherous Three before going solo in 1986, trading on a booming, rapid-fire delivery honed in early battle-rap culture, including a famous 1981 clash with Busy Bee that helped establish competitive rapping as a hip-hop institution. His solo singles 'Go See the Doctor' (1986) and 'How Ya Like Me Now' (1987) made him one of the genre's first bona fide solo rap stars, and he went on to become the first rapper to perform at, and later win, a Grammy Award.
