Julián Arcas

A touring virtuoso from Almería, Arcas was one of the most prominent concert guitarists in Spain by the 1850s and 60s, credited with encouraging guitar maker Antonio de Torres toward soundboard designs that shaped the modern classical guitar. He's best remembered today for a single encounter: hearing the ten-year-old Francisco Tárrega play and inviting him to Barcelona to study, setting the direction of Spanish classical guitar for the century that followed.
