Jaz-O
Jonathan Burks — Jaz-O, the Originator — was Marcy Houses' first rap star, a dexterous fast-flow technician who landed a major-label deal with EMI in the late 80s and brought his teenage protégé Shawn Carter along to the studio. His own stardom never arrived, but his fingerprints did: the rapid-fire, syllable-splitting style he drilled into the young Jay-Z became one of the foundational flows of 90s New York rap.
Jaz-O learned to rhyme in the era when Bronx routines circulated Brooklyn on cassette, and the craft standard on those tapes was set by Grandmaster Caz and the Cold Crush Brothers: writerly verses, comic charm, and tightly drilled two-man routines. The Jaz records that pair him with a young Jay-Z — voices trading and overlapping mid-line — work in exactly that tradition.

The Furious Five were the old-school act that proved MCs could carry characters and full narratives, not just party chants, and Jaz-O's storytelling cuts inherit that scaffolding — scene-setting verses, a cast of neighborhood characters, the punchline saved for the fade.

Kurtis Blow was the model of the major-label solo rap star — clean diction, radio-ready hooks, novelty charm — and Jaz-O's EMI period chased exactly that crossover lane. 'Hawaiian Sophie,' a tropical comedy record with a singalong hook, is a late-80s descendant of the pop-rap blueprint 'The Breaks' drew.
