Ike Turner

Ike Turner was a restless bandleader, session pianist, and talent scout whose Kings of Rhythm cut 'Rocket 88' in 1951 — a record many historians point to as an early, maybe the first, rock and roll single. He spent the following decades discovering and shaping other artists' sounds, most famously as the producer, arranger, and bandleader behind the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. His musical legacy is inseparable from — and complicated by — his history of abuse toward Tina Turner, a fact that shadows any account of his considerable innovations.
