Geraldo Pino

Gerald Pine, performing as Geraldo Pino, was a Sierra Leonean singer and bandleader whose group the Heartbeats toured West Africa relentlessly in the mid-1960s, importing a James-Brown-style funk-and-soul stage show that stunned audiences in Ghana and Nigeria. Fela Kuti himself credited Pino's Lagos shows with upending the local music scene just as Fela was searching for a sound beyond straight highlife-jazz.
