Cigarettes After Sex is the ambient dream-pop project that Greg Gonzalez founded in El Paso, Texas, in 2008, built around his androgynous, hushed vocals, glacially slow tempos, and reverb-soaked, monochrome production. After a 2012 EP and a self-titled 2017 debut album turned songs like 'Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby' and 'Apocalypse' into streaming-era slow-burners, the band became one of the most recognizable acts in a wave of gauzy, cinematic mood music. Gonzalez has described writing intimate, black-and-white romantic vignettes over minimal, echoing arrangements that prize atmosphere over hooks.

Mazzy Star1990s · Dream pop / Neo-psychedelia / Slowcore

Gonzalez has cited Mazzy Star among the touchstones for Cigarettes After Sex, and the kinship is audible: like Hope Sandoval, he sings in a hushed, androgynous murmur that sits low and unhurried in the mix, framed by clean, reverbed guitar figures and a refusal to rush toward a chorus.

Cocteau Twins1980s–90s · Dream pop / Ethereal wave / Post-punk

Cigarettes After Sex are routinely placed in the dream-pop lineage the Cocteau Twins helped invent, and Gonzalez has pointed to that ethereal 4AD sound; the connection lives in the gauzy, heavily reverbed guitars and the way melody floats atop atmosphere rather than driving it.

My Bloody Valentine1990s · Shoegaze / Noise pop / Dream pop

Cigarettes After Sex share the shoegaze instinct My Bloody Valentine perfected — burying song in a thick, enveloping cloud of guitar reverb — though Gonzalez pares it back to a slower, cleaner, more nocturnal register than Kevin Shields' overload.
