Carlos Santana
Born in Jalisco, Mexico, and raised in Tijuana and San Francisco, Carlos Santana formed his band Santana in the late 1960s and fused blues-rock guitar with Afro-Cuban and Latin American percussion, most famously in a fiery breakout set at Woodstock in 1969. His long, singing guitar tone — melodic and sustained rather than fast and blues-scale showy — made Latin rock a mainstream force and influenced generations of guitarists who wanted their solos to sound more like a voice than a display of speed.
