Begum Akhtar

Begum Akhtar, the 'Mallika-e-Ghazal' or queen of the ghazal, was a singer of ghazal, dadra and thumri whose grainy, ache-laden voice helped define mid-century North Indian light-classical song. Rooted in the courtesan and Hindustani-classical traditions, she gave the ghazal a confiding, deeply emotional intimacy across decades of concert and film work. Her recordings, among them 'Ae Mohabbat Tere Anjaam Pe Rona Aaya,' remain a benchmark of expressive ghazal singing.
