Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar

Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar was a Carnatic vocalist and the architect of the modern kutcheri paddhati - the standardized concert format, opening with a varnam and building through kritis to a central improvised pallavi, that South Indian classical concerts still follow today. Trained over more than a decade of residential study under Ramanathapuram 'Poochi' Srinivasa Iyengar, he was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (1954) and the Padma Bhushan (1958), and his disciples went on to shape generations of Carnatic music.
