Antonio María Romeu

Antonio María Romeu Marrero (1876-1955) was a self-taught, largely blind pianist from Matanzas province who moved to Havana and, in 1910, formed the charanga that carried his name for three decades. Billed as "El Mago de las Teclas" (the Keyboard Wizard), he was among the first bandleaders to put the piano at the center of the danzón orchestra rather than at its edge, composing over 500 danzones — "Tres Lindas Cubanas" foremost among them — and setting the flute-violins-piano template later charangas, Arcaño's included, would inherit wholesale.
