Alam Lohar

Born in 1928 in Punjab (later Pakistan), Alam Lohar is regarded as the greatest exponent of the Punjabi vaar and qissa tradition, the epic-ballad style recounting folk legends like Mirza Sahiban and Dulla Bhatti, and is also credited with popularizing the jugni song-form. He dominated Punjabi folk singing from the 1950s until his death in a road accident in 1979, leaving 15 gold-disc LPs and a musical dynasty carried on by his son Arif Lohar. His ballad style fed directly into the qissa-driven 'kali' singing that Kuldeep Manak would later make his own.
