Sheyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph was born in London and moved to Atlanta as a child, coming up in the city's Zone 6 neighborhoods before breaking out in 2015-16 with the EP 'Savage Mode,' a collaboration with producer Metro Boomin built on cavernous, minor-key trap and a flat, unhurried monotone. Where much of trap chased melody and mania, he leaned into deadpan menace and blunt first-person detail, later broadening into introspection and social commentary on the Grammy-nominated 'a lot.' His British birth became a very public matter during a 2019 immigration case, but his music stayed rooted in Atlanta's trap tradition.
Gucci Mane was the presiding figure of the Atlanta trap scene 21 Savage emerged from, and the inheritance is audible in the flat, deadpan delivery, the brick-and-money subject matter, and the unbothered cadence riding hard over spare, ominous production.
