Wendy Carlos

Wendy Carlos took the Moog synthesizer out of the laboratory and into the pop charts, rendering Bach's counterpoint through banks of oscillators on the unlikely blockbuster Switched-On Bach. She went on to score the unsettling electronic soundscapes of A Clockwork Orange and The Shining, proving synthesizers could carry dread as easily as delight. Practically every synth-pop and dance producer who followed owes her that initial proof of concept.
