Vybz Kartel

sourcesWikipedia

Adidja Palmer, born in 1976 in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in Portmore, rose from ghost-writing for Bounty Killer's Alliance to become one of dancehall's most prolific and influential deejays, later founding his own Portmore Empire crew. Nicknamed 'Worl' Boss,' his rapid, hyper-explicit lyricism and enormous output made him the genre's dominant figure through the 2000s and into the 2010s. Held from 2011 and convicted of murder in 2014 — a conviction ultimately overturned, leading to his 2024 release — he kept issuing music recorded during his incarceration throughout.

Shabba Ranks1990s · Dancehall

Vybz Kartel came up out of the ragga-deejay tradition Shabba Ranks defined at the turn of the 1990s — the gruff, rapid-fire toasting and the unabashed slackness that made the deejay a star in his own right rather than a hype man over a riddim.

Buju Banton1990s · Dancehall / Reggae

Buju Banton's rough, baritone deejay attack and gritty street narratives helped set the tone of early-90s dancehall, the harder-edged lineage Vybz carried forward into the 2000s.

Yellowman1980s · Dancehall

Yellowman's melodic, playful sing-jay boasting — the deejay-as-melodic-hitmaker model of early-80s dancehall — prefigures the more tuneful, hook-driven side of Vybz's catalog, where he sings as much as he toasts.
