Sylvester
Sylvester James turned a church-trained falsetto and an unapologetically flamboyant stage presence into some of disco's most transcendent records. He carried gospel's raw emotional force onto the dance floor, singing like he was testifying even when the subject was pure hedonistic joy. As an openly gay Black performer commanding mainstream airwaves in the late seventies, he made disco's utopian promise feel real.
