Soni D
A Chicago-born DJ working Memphis's Club No Name in the mid-1980s, Soni D predates even DJ Spanish Fly on the city's turntables and, with rapper Kool K, pressed one of Memphis rap's first vinyl singles, 'I Need Money,' in 1987. Little of his catalog survives beyond cassette, but Three 6 Mafia's DJ Paul and Juicy J both single him out by name as one of the two mentors who shaped the Memphis sound before it had a name.
