Queen Latifah
Dana Owens, known as Queen Latifah, is a Newark rapper who arrived in the late 1980s with a regal, socially conscious style that pushed back against hip-hop's more combative posturing. Her 1989 single “Ladies First,” with Monie Love, became an anthem of hip-hop feminism and helped establish her as one of the genre's pioneering women.
