Purandara Dasa
Purandara Dasa was a 15th–16th century Kannada poet-composer and Haridasa saint credited with systematizing the graded lesson structure (sarali, janta and alankara exercises) still used to teach Carnatic music today. Of the thousands of devotional kirtanas attributed to him, only a small fraction survive, but their simple, singable melodic language made him the tradition's acknowledged founding figure, honored as its 'Pitamaha,' or grandsire.
