Lucky Millinder

Lucky Millinder led one of the great swing-era big bands despite, famously, being unable to read music or play an instrument — his gift was pure showmanship and an ear for talent, assembling and directing musicians into a tight, riff-driven sound built for dancing. His band served as a proving ground for younger performers who passed through its ranks on the way to their own careers. Records like 'Apollo Jump' show the propulsive, horn-driven energy that made his orchestra one of the bridges between swing and the rhythm and blues that followed.
