Le Grand Kallé

Joseph Athanase Tshamala Kabasele, known as Le Grand Kallé, founded the band African Jazz in 1953 Léopoldville and is widely credited as the father of modern Congolese popular music. Blending Cuban son and rumba records circulating in Central Africa with Congolese guitar styles and percussion, he and his band produced "Indépendance Cha Cha" in 1960, a celebration of Congo's independence that became one of the first pan-African hits and spread the Congolese rumba sound across the continent.
