Lambert, Hendricks & Ross
Formed in New York in 1957 by Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and Annie Ross, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross pioneered vocalese — setting rapid-fire original lyrics to note-for-note transcriptions of famous jazz instrumental solos — and became the most celebrated vocal group in jazz before Ross's departure ended the classic lineup in the early 1960s. Their tongue-twisting, swinging virtuosity on records like 'The Hottest New Group in Jazz' set a technical and comedic bar vocal jazz singers are still measured against.
