K. Deep
Born Kuldeep Singh Kang in 1940 in Rangoon, K. Deep became one of Punjab's most popular folk-duet singers after marrying fellow vocalist Jagmohan Kaur in 1971, the two performing together as the comic characters Mai Mohno and Posti in what's considered Punjab's first recorded comedy-song act. He debuted with the 1969 HMV single 'Nashean Naal Yaari, Roli Main Izzat Sari' and was reportedly the first to record songs written by poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi. A young Amar Singh Chamkila performed alongside K. Deep, Mohammad Sadiq and Surinder Shinda as he broke into Punjab's folk-duet circuit.
