Jorge Negrete
Jorge Negrete was a Mexican singer and film star trained in formal bel canto technique under opera coach José Pierson before he was persuaded — reluctantly, at first — to apply that big, disciplined voice to ranchera song, becoming a founding pillar of the golden-age "canción mexicana" alongside Pedro Infante and Javier Solís. His charro-suited screen persona and booming baritone on songs like "Ay Jalisco No Te Rajes" made ranchera a matinee-idol genre nationally and internationally.
