Johnny Ventura

Johnny Ventura (1940-2021) was a Dominican singer and bandleader who transformed merengue from the late 1950s onward, speeding up its tempo, tightening its horn-driven combo sound, and adding electrifying, choreographed showmanship that earned him the nickname "El Caballo." A dominant figure in Caribbean dance music for decades, he modernized merengue for the television age and influenced generations of Dominican artists. He received a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
