Guty Cárdenas

Augusto Alejandro 'Guty' Cárdenas Pinelo, born in Mérida in 1905, was a singer, guitarist, and composer who became the most celebrated voice of the trova yucateca, nicknamed 'el ruiseñor yucateco.' Between 1928 and his death in 1932 he recorded roughly two hundred songs in Mexico and the United States, and his anthem 'Rayito de Sol' became an enduring emblem of Yucatecan song. Murdered in a Mexico City cantina at just twenty-seven, he left a compact but foundational body of work that shaped Mexico's romantic-song tradition.
