Guinea-Jazz

One of several dance orchestras working Dakar's nightclub circuit in the years before Senegalese independence, Guinea-Jazz is remembered today almost entirely through its personnel: when the band folded around 1959, saxophonist Dexter Johnson, guitarist Papa Diabaté, bassist Harisson and trumpeter Bob Armstrong all crossed over into Ibra Kassé's newly formed Star Band, carrying their Cuban-based dance-band book with them. No recordings under the Guinea-Jazz name are known to survive.
