Giovanni Battista Martini
Giovanni Battista Martini - known as Padre Martini - was a Franciscan friar in Bologna who became the most respected music teacher and theorist of eighteenth-century Italy. A prolific composer and encyclopedic scholar, he assembled one of Europe's great music libraries and counted Johann Christian Bach and Mozart among the many musicians who sought his instruction in counterpoint. His authority in matters of church music and theory was recognized across the continent.
