Gap Band

Formed by the Wilson brothers — Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert — and named for three streets in Tulsa's historic Greenwood district, the Gap Band became one of the defining funk acts of the late '70s and early '80s, stacking dancefloors with the call-and-response stomp of "Oops Upside Your Head" and the synth-driven "You Dropped a Bomb on Me." Charlie Wilson's elastic falsetto and the band's hard, minimal grooves made them a foundational sample source for house, hip-hop, and G-funk alike.
