Felipe Pedrell
A composer and musicologist who spent his career arguing that Spanish concert music should sound Spanish — built from its own folk songs and modal color rather than imported Italian or German models — Pedrell taught a generation of Barcelona conservatory students, Miguel Llobet among them, to hear regional folk tradition as material worthy of the concert stage. His opera trilogy ‘Els Pirineus’ was his fullest attempt to put that nationalist ideal into practice.
