Doris Day
Born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Cincinnati in 1922, Doris Day sang with big bands led by Les Brown before going solo and becoming one of the top-selling vocalists of the 1950s, her clear, sunny soprano defining a strand of postwar American pop on hits like 'Sentimental Journey' and 'Que Sera, Sera.' Equally successful as a Hollywood star, she brought the same warm, unaffected directness to both her singing and her acting. She largely retired from performing by the late 1960s but remained one of the most recognizable voices of mid-century American pop.
