Cornelio Reyna

Cornelio Reyna Cisneros was born in 1940 in Natillas, Coahuila, and taught himself accordion before switching to bajo sexto as a teenager working cantinas around Reynosa, Tamaulipas. Discovered there in 1963, he paired his distinctive tenor and songwriting with young accordionist Ramón Ayala as Los Relámpagos del Norte — a duo credited with setting the modern template for norteño-conjunto music — before a 1971 split sent Reyna toward a solo and film career that lasted until his death in 1997.
